June 2019 Newsletter

June 2019 Newsletter

Dear Dancers,

The Club is still collecting membership dues for 2019-20.  The rate will continue at $45 for the year and was due May 1, 2019.  Forms will be available at the sign-in table at tonight’s dance Or you can also renew and pay on line under our website:  The sooner the dues are submitted, the sooner we can put the Club Roster together!

Members: we have several members that support the Singles Club financially through dues, but don’t come to dances.  We miss you!! If you want to come but can’t drive, please ask someone to pick you up! If you can drive, but can no longer dance, we still want to see you!  Socializing is as much of the activity as the dancing itself!  And FOOD!  Friendship, food, and fitness.

This year’s 68th National Square Dance Convention is in Atlanta, GA on June 27-29, 2019. Some of you are going and it should be a lot of fun!!  Be safe in your travels.

If you are not going to Nationals, then join us for our upcoming June 28th dance; its theme is Summer in the City, and it is with Ed Pabst and Chuck Berry. I think of silhouetted city sky lines, so wear black and white!

This Friday night, we dance to Tom Davis and Phyllis Burdette for our Memorial Day Dance.  Wear your red, white and blue!!

And with that, it’s time to say…… get out and DANCE!!

Lynn LeMaster

Wish these dancers a Happy Birthday when you see them in a square!

We’re Alabama Bound!  It’s exciting that SSDUSA is going where we have never gone before!  Our 49th Dance-A-Rama (DAR) on Labor Day weekend will be held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham–The Wynfrey Hotel. The hotel is actually in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham.  The featured callers are Silver Eagle Recording Artists: Joe (Little Joe) Goins – TN, Tom Davis – OH, Greg Hatmaker – TN, and Gene Aldridge – TN. The cuers will be Robbie Carrington – TN and Diane Martin-Hamilton – AL, and they will also lead some line dances. Our Trail In dance is on Thursday evening, August 29th, at the host hotel. The DAR itself is August 30 to September 1, 2019.
We hope you will plan to join us in Alabama and that you will invite all of your dance friends to join you there.  We need your help to get the word out about all the fun we have.  Just look at what we have to offer!  We have a great line up of callers and cuers.  There will be four different halls and none of the dancing will be on carpet.  There will be square dancing programmed for you whether you dance Mainstream, Plus, DBD, A1 or A2. There will be rounds from levels II through V or VI. Also, there will be line dancing. All of the halls are on the same level, and if you stay at the host hotel, you will be close to the action.
Our registration forms are available on our flyer table. Also you can go to to obtain a form. All square and round dancers are welcome! Be sure to mark your calendars now for the 49th Dance-A-Rama on Labor Day weekend! See you in Alabama!

The Central Ohio Corporation of Dance Clubs (Council) held its regular meeting on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.  Some of the main points discussed were:

  • The updated application form for the COCDC friendship dangle is now online.  To have their attendance at a dance verified, the person must give their smartphone to a club officer.
  • There will be four Summer Fun dances this year.  These are intended to keep new graduates dancing over the summer; they can be part workshop, and are not intended to be high-energy dances.
  • Clothing donations are still needed for the Relay for Life dance on June 8.
  • Pat Liston resigned as Treasurer of COCDC in April; Gary Jay of Westerville is the new treasurer.
  • There will be a combined Eastern-Western square dance on Sunday, September 8, at the Eastpointe church, sponsored by Angie Riffle and Stephen Jenkins.  They hope to attract new people to Western-style squares.
  • Council voted to support two charities with the income that was previously donated to Toys for Tots:  toys and cash donated at the Toys for Tots dance in December will continue to go to Toys for Tots, and donations given at the Summer Fun Dances will go to Ronald McDonald House.
  • The preliminary count of dancers at the recent State Convention was 510.
  • The 2020 convention will be sponsored by the Cincinnati federation, but will be held at the Crowne Plaza North in Columbus.  There will be a Trail-In dance on April 30; the convention will be held May 1-2.
  • Based on club reports, Central Ohio clubs graduated 45 new dancers this year.
  • Old Business:
    – Council is still working on ways to support square dancers who don’t necessarily want to dance
Plus. The committee had a meeting; they will now contact callers to see if any will support a
    Mainstream club.
  •    – Council will print hard-copy schedules again this year.  Clubs must send their schedules to Mark
Johnson and Velma Doyle by June 1 to be included.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:24 p.m.

As of the May Board Meeting, 27 members have renewed their membership.  We have a new member: Kathy Newman-Gall!!  Kathy took lessons with us 2017-18, but moved to California before she finished classes.  She learned the rest of the plus calls while there, and returned to Ohio in January. Welcome back and thank you for joining!
We had a very nice time on April 26th with our Bulbs and Bunnies Dance.  We had 46 guests and 19 members come to dance to Tom Strickland and Chuck Berry.  We had 6 squares on the floor all evening.  Fun dancing everyone!

The Board has decided to start lessons next Fall on September 10, 2019 at the Maize Manor UMC; time will be 7-9 pm with Ed Laudenschlager instructing.

Mark your calendars now for the Americana Jamboree Special Dance on Sunday, July 14th at the Gahanna Community Congregational Church. It will be co-sponsored by Orbiting Squares & Buckeye A2’s. The featured callers are Sam Dunn & Dave Stuthard, and Phyllis Burdette will be on rounds. Format of Dance: Advance 2:00 to 3:00, Early Rounds 3:00 to 3:30, and Plus With Rounds 3:30 to 6:00. All dancers pay $8.00 per person.  If you have not danced to Sam Dunn before, you are in for a special treat. Sam called in Ohio from 1978 to 2003, when he moved to Florida where he currently calls for two clubs.  He has been a recording artist with Red Boot Records & Tarheel Records. Sam, Dave Stuthard, Jack Pladdys & former caller Bill Bumgarner used to call together as the “Fab Four”.

So tired of rain and mud. The farmers are so far behind this year and parts of my yard still feels like swampland. I got two pastures mowed and only got stuck three times. Not bad.

I hope you’re getting out and dancing. There have been great dances and fun callers. If you didn’t make it to the State Convention in Aurora, you missed a fantastic time. Always nice to dance to new callers, dance with new and old friends.

Hope y’all come to the Memorial Day dance this Friday. Tom Davis is calling and Phyllis Burdette is cueing. Come celebrate our military and have fun dancing and catching up with friends.

See you in a square!
