September 2018 Newsletter

September is a busy month for us!!  Lessons start on Tuesday, September 4 at our new location!!  Maize Manor United Methodist Church, 3901 Maize Road, Columbus, OH   43224.  The location is just south of Cooke Road.  Ed Laudenschlager is instructing.

It’s time to be thinking about nominating a Club Honoree from Bucks and Does Singles.  Nomination forms will be available at tonight’s dance and are due back by the September 14th dance.  The form is also attached at the end of this Newsletter.  I know this is early; Council (COCDC) is asking for Honoree Candidates by November 5th, before the holidays.  Since we only dance once a month, we need to move this along earlier.

September 14 is our Tools for Schools Charity Dance.  For admission, we ask you to bring school supplies or a cash donation for the Duxberry Park Arts IMPACT Elementary School. This dance is also Amateur Night.  Dave Van Dyk will MC and Dave Blaskis will cue the rounds.

September 28th is our 43rd Anniversary Dance.  Ed Laudenschlager and Dave Stuthard are calling together and Mark Johnson is cuing.

Don’t forget, tonight we dance to Mark Clausing and Chuck Berry.  It’s our Luau!  This is always a great dance for us!!

And with that, it’s time to say…… get out and DANCE!!

Bucks and Does will start lessons at a new location!!  We will be at the Maize Manor United Methodist Church, 3901 Maize Road, just south of E. Cooke Road.   Our start date is September 4, 2018 from 7-9 pm with Ed and Faye Laudenschlager instructing.

The Church is having a luncheon, Sunday, September 2, after their church service.  We have asked if we could put on a true demo to showcase western square dancing.  They have agreed and Ed will call for us.  The time will be approximately 1 pm.  Dress attire is your choice. We need at least two more dancers.  I realize the date is Labor Day Weekend, and Dance-A-Rama, but not everyone takes off.

Speaking of lessons, we are trying something “new.”  We plan to teach Basic (51 calls) and Mainstream (another 17 calls) only this year. With starting on September 4, we can get in 15 lessons before Christmas. Will 15 weeks verses 30 weeks make a difference in recruiting and retaining New Dancers??  We want to try.  We have retained only a handful of New Dancers in recent years when we have traditionally taught Basic, Mainstream and Plus (another 29 calls).  The plan is to start a new class in January and these New Graduates can angel their friends.

Where will these new mainstream graduates dance?  Hi-los are abundant January through April.  And then what?  Will Bucks & Doescontinue to have hi-lo dances all the time?  We only dance once a month, so is that enough floor time to maintain their dancing skills?  Will other clubs change to a year around hi-lo program?  Will these New Dancers want to go on to Plus??

There are a lot of questions, but first we need a class of New Dancers!!

The club rosters are ready!! I have distributed 19 booklets so far.  I will continue to distribute them at Friday’s dance, and then put the rest of them in the mail.  I am still asking for comments on a paperless roster for 2019-20.  We can put it on our website with password protection.

We had a great time on July 27th with our Root Beer Float Dance.  Caller Mark Patterson was able to fill in for Kristy Williams and Chuck Berry cued.  August 10, we hosted a Summer Fun Dance, sponsored by COCDC.  Jason Raleigh called this dance and we had 4-5 squares on the floor most of the night.  Dancers donated $130 as admission for the Toys for Tots Dance in December.

Good news! Even if you cannot make it to the SSDUSA Dance-A-Rama festival, you still can enjoy a great dance by attending the DAR Trail In dance on Thursday, August 30th. Wes Dyer (Big Enis) is calling the dance and Phyllis Burdette, Cathy Fisher & Pauline Angress will each do a set of rounds. The dance is from 7:30 to 10:30 PM at the Westin Indianapolis Hotel, 241 W. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Mainstream with Rounds and Announced Plus. (You pay $10.00 per person at the door.)  ALL dancers, whether couples or solos, are welcome!

If you want to have even more fun, it’s not too late to join us for the Dance-A-Rama itself from August 31 to September 2 at the Weston Indianapolis. Just look at what we have to offer!  We have a great line up of callers (Tom Miller, Mike Hogan, Tim Tyl, Tom Davis & Travis Cook and cuers (Phyllis Burdette, Cathy Fisher & Pauline Angress). There will be five different halls and none of the dancing will be on carpet.  There will be square dancing programmed for you whether you dance Mainstream, Plus, DBD, A1 or A2. There will be rounds from levels II through V or VI.  Also, there will be line dancing and after parties led by Doug & Donna Riley.  All of the halls are on the same level; and if you stay at the host hotel, you will be close to the action. We are offering five terrific tours, and we will have a clothing vendor and badge vendor. Whether you are solo or a couple, we would love to have you and your dancer friends join us for this FUN weekend.

The Central Ohio Corporation of Dance Clubs (Council) held its regular meeting on Monday, August 6, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.  Some of the main points discussed were:

·        The summer has been busy with many demos and Summer Fun Dances.  A few toys and some cash have already been collected for Toys for Tots.

·        Council is still selling “ask me about square dancing” shirts.

·        There will be a demo on Oct. 13 at Oakland Nursery on Oakland Park Avenue.

·        Toys for Tots will be held Sunday, Dec 9, 2018, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Gahanna Community Congregational Church, 470 Havens Corner Rd, Gahanna.  Callers will be Tom Davis & Dave Stuthard; Chuck Berry will be the cuer.

·        The State Convention made over $9,000 with 608 dancers.  Council is considering whether to host another convention after 2020.

·        The callers’ association asked area clubs to give their class callers/instructors the authority to decide who should be allowed to graduate from beginners’ lessons, and to excuse dancers from lessons if they are showing no progress.

·        There was a discussion of dance level in our area.  If more clubs had Hi/Lo dances all year long, Mainstream dancers would have places to dance, which would increase the number of square dancers.

·        Old Business:

·        Rules have been developed and forms published for the Purple Heart dangle.

·        There was a discussion about the Council website and the new site.  Both sites will be maintained, and each will keep its own calendar.

·        New Business:

·        A special meeting of Council was called for Thursday, Sept. 13, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., to review the Honoree selection process.

·        Club Reports:

·        Johnny Appleseeds will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Sept. 22nd, with Jason Raleigh calling and Phyllis Burdette cueing.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:31 p.m.

Each year the Central Ohio Corporation of Dance Clubs (COCDC) honors a couple or individual for their contributions to the square dance community.  Each COCDC member club can nominate one or two people for this honor.  Our Honoree(s) do not have to be members of our club, but they need to have participated in activities that have benefited the club and/or the square dance community.  Among the criteria to be considered are the number of years danced, club offices held (if any), committee and offices held at council, state or national level (if any), participation in demos, participation in banner steals, participation in other club activities and other community activities (square dance oriented).  By September 14, we accept nominations; then at the September 28 and October 26 dances, Bucks & Does members are asked to vote to select one or two people from among the nominees to be our Club Honoree(s) and to represent our club at the COCDC Honoree Dance in March. Past COCDC Honorees will be sent the biographies (with names and club names blacked out) for all of the Club Honorees, and the Past COCDC Honorees vote to select the overall winner.  It is an honor at the club level to be selected as the Club Honoree and at the council level to be selected as the COCDC Honoree.  The COCDC Honoree(s) also is/are recognized at a luncheon at Ohio’s State Dance Convention in May.

This is a way to give recognition to anyone you feel has contributed significantly to Bucks & Does Singles and/or to our square dance community as a whole.  A copy of the Nomination Form is attached; please complete it and turn it in at our dances or classes by Sept 14, 2018
