July 2018 Newsletter

Spring was short and the summer is proving to be hot, humid and long. Drink lots of water and stay in the shade!

This year’s 67th National Square Dance Convention is in Kansas City, Missouri on June 27-30, 2018.  Some of you may be going.  It should be a lot of fun!!  Be safe in your travels.

Our upcoming July 27th Dance Theme is Root Beer Float Night with Kristy Williams and Chuck Berry.

Don’t forget, tonight we dance to Roger Steele and Linda Warren for our Summer Solstice Dance! Wear bright yellow and orange colors for the longest day of the year!!

Please remember that we all share in bringing finger foods to our dances. A stop at the grocery store on your way to dance for a bag of chips, a veggie tray, fruit platter, cookies, are all acceptable items.  We had a big crowd at our Memorial Day Dance and the table was pretty sparse. I made a run to Kroger’s to fill up the table.  Thank you, Larry Dulin, for helping with the cost!

And with that, it’s time to say…… get out and DANCE!!

Lynn LeMaster

Wish these dancers a Happy Birthday when you see them in a square!

As of the June 11, we are now 32 members strong for the 2018-19 year. We will be working on the Club Roster soon and hope to get it out to everyone by the end of the month.

We had a great time on May 25th at our May Memorial Day Dance.  There were 19 members present and 50 guests.  We all enjoyed dancing to Travis Cook and Phyllis Burdette, with six-seven squares on the floor all evening.

Lessons will start September 4, the day after Labor Day, with Ed Laudenschlager as our Instructor. The Board is working to secure a different location in the Northland area near or on Maize Road. If this is unsuccessful, then we will hold lessons at the Eastview United Methodist Church, 1045 Ross Road in Whitehall.  Time will be 7-9 pm.

The Board is looking at creative ways to save this activity. Focus on teaching Basic and Mainstream only for a 12-week class. Start over in January for another 12-week class. We discussed starting Mainstream Dances in January on the second Fridays.

We could reward our members with payment to bring and keep New Dancers.

We could charge New Dancers for the Session, then reimburse them if they attend all lessonsor no charge, then pay them if they attend all lessons.

What are your thoughts????

This year Orbiting Squares will not hold the long series of plus workshops that they have held during the summer in recent years. Instead, there will only be three plus level “Refresher Workshop” sessions that will be held on Aug 2, 9 and 16, from 7 to 9 PM at the Gahanna Community Congregational Church. Instructor: Mark Johnson. $5 per person per class.

We are looking forward to the upcoming 48th Dance-A-Rama in Indianapolis, IN on Labor Day weekend (August 31-Sept 3, 2018)! Ron Holland and John Cook (Co-Chairmen) have been getting things ready in order to make this year’s festival a fantastic success.  However, we also need your support, so please register and make your hotel reservations at the Westin Indianapolis ASAP.  Pre-registering helps us plan a better dance and guarantees you a room at the dance venue.

Wes Dyer will call the Trail-In Dance on Thursday evening, with Phyllis Burdette, Cathy Fisher and Pauline Angress doing the cueing.  The festival itself will feature a great line up of callers:  Tom Miller, Mike Hogan, Tim Tyl, Tom Davis and Travis Cook. The equally great cuers will be Cathy & Fred Fisher, Phyllis & Doug Burdette, and Pauline Angress.  Doug & Donna Riley will be leading Line Dances, and also will perform at our After Parties on Friday (with Country Western music) and Saturday (with Rock & Roll music).

Along with the great dancing, we are offering five terrific tours. We will be going out Thursday morning to see the one-room school house in Pittsboro and eating lunch at the Mayberry Café while we watch the “Andy Griffith Show.”  Friday morning, we will see the Conner Prairie Interactive History Park which depicts life in early Indiana in four different settings in the 800-acre park.  Friday afternoon, we are offering a wine tasting tour, which includes the wine tasting, tour of the Easley’s Winery, and an extensive gift shop where wine and other items may be purchased.  Saturday morning, all you speed buffs can visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Our annual mystery dangle dance will be on Sunday morning, and, of course, the dance locations are a “mystery.” This is always one of our most popular tours.

If shopping appeals to you, you will want to check out the clothing and shoes that Paula Cleary of Paula’s Square Dance Shop will bring. SusanElaine Packer will also be there selling badges, dangles and other assorted items.

You can pick up a flyer/registration form from our flyer table or download one at Couples, along with solo dancers, are welcome! Come join the fun! We hope to see you in INDY!
