As of the May Board meeting, 23 members had renewed their membership, two new graduates joined (Addy Renz and Bob Idle), and three returning dancers joined:  Ray Owens, Marcia Taylor and Terry Taylor.  Marcia and Terry met at Bucks & Does many years ago and they are glad to be back to the club and dancing!! We have a total of 28 so far.   I expect to receive at least five more.

We had a great time at our April Showers Dance on April 27th, with 16 members present and 48 guests, including seven new graduates.  We all enjoyed dancing to Dan Austen and Dave Blaskis, with seven squares on the floor all evening.

This year Orbiting Squares will not hold the long series of plus workshops that they have held during the summer in recent years. Instead, there will only be three plus level “Refresher Workshop” sessions that will be held on Aug 2, 9 and 16, from 7 to 9 PM at the Gahanna Community Congregational Church. Instructor: Mark Johnson. $5 per person per class.

I am writing this article as the new President of SSDUSA, due to the resignation of our prior President. (There was an automatic progression of Vice President into this position.)

We are looking forward to the upcoming 48th Dance-A-Rama in Indianapolis, IN on Labor Day weekend. Although the sponsor is Single Square Dancers USA (SSDUSA), couples along with single and solo dancers, are absolutely welcome.  Just look at what we have to offer!  There will be five different halls and none of the dancing will be on carpet. There will be square dancing programmed for you whether you dance Mainstream, Plus, DBD, A1 or A2. There will be rounds from levels II through V or VI. Plus, there will be line dancing. All of the halls are on the same level, and if you stay at the Westin Indianapolis, you will be close to the action.

Wes Dyer will call the Trail-In Dance on Thursday evening, with Phyllis Burdette, Cathy Fisher and Pauline Angress doing the cueing.  The festival itself will feature five top notch callers: Tom Miller, Mike Hogan, Tim Tyl, Tom Davis and Travis Cook. The equally outstanding cuers will be Cathy & Fred Fisher, Phyllis & Doug Burdette, and Pauline Angress.  Doug & Donna Riley will be leading Line Dances, and also will perform at our After Parties on Friday (with Country Western music) and Saturday (with Rock & Roll music).

Along with the great dancing, we are offering five terrific tours. We will be going out Thursday morning to see the one-room school house in Pittsboro and eating lunch at the Mayberry Café’ while we watch the “Andy Griffith Show.”  Friday morning, we will see the Conner Prairie Interactive History Park which depicts life in early Indiana in four different settings in the 800-acre park.  On Friday afternoon, we are offering a wine tasting tour, which includes the wine tasting, tour of the Easley’s Winery, and an extensive gift shop where wine and other items may be purchased.  On Saturday morning, all you speed buffs can visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Our annual mystery dangle dance will be on Sunday morning, and, of course, the dance locations are a “mystery.” This is always one of our most popular tours.

If shopping appeals to you, you will want to check out the clothing and shoes that Paula Cleary of Paula’s Square Dance Shop will bring. SusanElaine Packer will also be there selling badges, dangles and other assorted items.

Ron Holland and John Cook (Co-Chairmen) have been getting things ready in order to make this year’s festival a fantastic success.  However, we also need your support, so please register and make your hotel reservations at the Westin Indianapolis ASAP.  Pre-registering helps us plan a better dance and guarantees you a room at the dance venue.

You can pick up a flyer/registration form from the flyer tables at many local clubs or download one at Couples, along with single and solo dancers, are welcome! Come join the fun!
